FAQs
General Product Information
Wingo is a gait machine for people with neurologic deficits. It is a medical wearable device composed of a smart textile (e.g. stocking) with a sensor sole, unique actuators, a control unit, an accompanying app and accessories.
Wingo is for people with neurologic deficits causing neuropathic pain and/or gait instability and insecurity, for example individuals with diabetic sensory-motor peripheral neuropathy (DSPN).
In case of neurologic deficits signals from the peripheral nervous system about the surface conditions are not more properly or not transmitted to the brain. Wingo works like a by-pass. It helps bringing information about the rolling movement of the foot back to the brain. As a result, pain is reduced or disappears. Parallel it stimulates the right muscles at the right time and promotes a smooth, light-footed gait. The vibrations from Wingo promote blood circulation and blood flow in the legs. This supports the regeneration of damaged blood vessels and peripheral nerves – an important aspect for diabetics.
It combines vibration stimulation (for nerve and muscle activation), focal vibration therapy, compression therapy, and lymphatic drainage—all integrated into wearable textiles.
Yes, Wingo is a approved medical device.
YES, because of the lost peripheral sensation. WINGO works like a bypass. It bridges the part of your nerve system which is damaged. Because the somatosensory cortex gets information from the peripheral again your proprioception is working again, which leads to balance and stability.
YES, data show that after the usement of Wingo for more then 14 days the brain accepts the new information as the information from the healthy leg.
Intended Use & Benefits
It was developed for individuals with diabetic sensory-motor peripheral neuropathy (DSPN), which causes pain, loss of balance, and gait disturbances.
Aims to restore lost sensation, reduce neuropathic pain, improve gait security, lower fall risk, enhance mobility, and support long-term blood sugar regulation.
Through vibration and compression, it encourages blood circulation, facilitating the regeneration of nerves and blood vessels—leveraging the science behind Medical Nobel Prize–winning discoveries.
Yes, if the cause of the pain is neuropathic pain.
Yes, here the improvement of gait security, lower fall risk, enhanced mobility and supporting long-term blood sugar regulation is achieved.
Scientific & Research Foundations
Builds on the 2021 Nobel Prize in Medicine’s discoveries regarding mechanotransduction (Piezo receptors). It transmitted those mechanisms in a medical device.
Yes—a review by co-founder Gerfried Peternell on focal vibration therapy explores benefits such as vascular and nerve repair, reduced neuroma growth, enhanced motor control, and pain relief.
Initial test subjects have been involved in validation studies based on research conducted at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental Traumatology.
Events & Recognition
Wingo is showcased at the Austrian Pavilion during Expo 2025 in Osaka. In a roll-out in Germany and Austria more and more medical supply stores, pain ambulances and rehabilitation centers will prepare detailed information’s. For a specific region please contact our help desk.
Yes—Sqail won an IÖB project for their smart textile in pain therapy, received Preseed funding via Austria Wirtschaftsservice and a grant from Lower Austria as part of an StartUp incubation program
Usage & Comfort
The Wingo gait machine is a functional enhancement. It is compatible with most commercially available shoes.
No, we do not recommend it. Although the electronics (WMU) is tested to be waterproof but the manufacturer gives no guarentee – The sock contains different electronic parts which are water-resistant but should still be treated gently.
The product is intended for everyday use and may only be used in typical environments (e.g. at home, at work, or outdoors). It is not intended for unusual or extreme activities such as extreme sports, use in hazardous environments (e.g. areas with flammable gases, dust or explosive atmosphere), or under conditions outside the specified climate, light, and noise conditions.
No, there is no risk of overheating. WINGO is designed to operate safely under a wide range of temperatures. For full details, please refer to the IFU, which outlines optimal usage conditions.
Wingo is an easy-to-use medical device. Charge the Wingo Mainunit (WMU) after unpacking.
Technical & Operating
When the WMU and WBU are connected and the LED shines white, the system is activated.
Yes, through the app you can configure the system individually.
The following settings can be configured on the smartphone:
- Vibration intensity
- Vibration duration
- Activation and deactivation of individual vibration motors
- Trigger thresholds of the sensor sock
There is only one main mode for operation, but there is also a mode for the settings.
To configure settings on the system, it must be connected to the app. To do this, the WMU must be connected to and disconnected from the charging cable three times. The LED will then flash blue. Once this has been done, the system is in pairing mode and can be connected via the smartphone app.
Yes, the following settings can be configured on the smartphone:
- Vibration intensity
- Vibration duration
- Activation and deactivation of individual vibration motors
- Trigger thresholds of the sensor sock
To disconnect from the system, press the button in the upper left corner.
This depends on the daily duration and the distances of walking. Wingo was configured to have a battery capacity for more than one day intensive walking. Therefore the system should be charged once a day in night.
WINGO consists of two main components:
- The electronics (WMU):This detachable unit contains a rechargeable battery. Under normal usage, the battery typically lasts around 2 years, depending on charging cycles.
- The sock(with integrated sensors): With regular, non-continuous barefoot use, the sock is designed to last over one year.
Vibrotactile motors or activators are integrated in the WMU and the wearable textile structure. They are small devices, typically DC motors, that generate vibrations through eccentric rotating masses to provide haptic signals for feedback and feedforward to a user’s sense of touch.
